John E. Chickering was fresh from the Army, college and broadcasting school when he landed his first position in advertising in 1976 with a Detroit area ad agency, producing syndicated radio and TV ads. In 1978, the legendary Norman, Navan, Moore & Baird advertising agency in Grand Rapids hired Chickering as its broadcast production manager. In 1980, John founded Chickering Associates, Inc. as an advertising agency.
In 1989, Chickering entered the broadcasting business, eventually owning and operating five radio stations in markets across northwestern Michigan. In 1997, Chickering joined long-time client Bissell Inc., serving as director of advertising and managing other marketing projects.
Today, John Chickering directs Chickering Associates, Inc. primarily as a multi-media production and marketing communications services firm, from his studio office near Rockford, Michigan. He personally writes, directs and edits video and audio productions, designs and builds websites, provides voiceover talent, prepares media strategies, designs brochures and print ads, and writes marketing programs. The “Associates” are talented, experienced, capable professionals Chickering collaborates with when additional assistance or specialized skills are needed.

John married his wife Karen in 1980. They have two children, daughter Julianne, and son John Jr.
